“GPT” stands for “Generative Pretrained Transformer”.  Say What?  ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot system that offers conversational responses to questions. The core function of a chatbot is to mimic a human conversation. The database has a huge pool of information, allowing it to generate human-like responses to a wide variety of questions

A scientific researcher determined that ChatGPT has an IQ of 83 or so.  With the average human IQ of 100, it means that ChatGPT programs can take on human jobs that require repetitive tasks without much analytical reasoning.  Simple administrative tasks can be done by artificial intelligence, replacing employees that can perform higher value tasks.  But what happens to those lower-level jobs that can be performed by employees with only an IQ of 83?  Guess.

What artificial intelligence can’t do (yet) is generate ideas to better perform the task.  It only perform repetitive tasks more efficiently.  It can’t problem solve a one-of-a-kind customer issue, only repeat a policy that applies to all customers.

The question remains, what happens when the IQ of artificial intelligence moves from 83 to 93 to 103 or more?  When students are asked to write a report on the difference between World War I and World War II, all they need to do is ask the question through artificial intelligence.  They can then just sign their names and create a credible report.  What the student is not learning are research skills of a scholar, creative expressive composition, putting together ideas in a clear and meaningful way, and presenting the best quality material for the report.  Instead, the student is becoming a robot around the information created by a robot.

Artificial intelligence is being hailed as the future of work, but not everyone is convinced. Some technologists see it as a disruptor for jobs, along with legal issues and other conflicts. Who is responsible for a self-driving car that kills someone?  Or errors that are caused by a faulty algorithm?  Chat GPT may miss the non-literal meaning behind words. It also lacks common sense.  Currently artificial intelligence is limited to Q&A applications and simple problem-solving.

How can you tell if you’re communicating on the telephone with a robot?  When you find an error on your credit card and call to make a correction.  The prompt asks you to define your problem in three words or less.  That means you’re probably talking to an artificial intelligence system.  How do you know?  When the robot says, “I don’t understand your answer”, or the robot sends you to the wrong department because the words you use are misunderstood.

If you want to have some fun (and have the time), the next time your asked to define your problem, say something like “incoherent metric statement” meaning you don’t understand the bill, or “request advisory interface”, meaning you’d like to talk with a human.

Bottom line:  Get used to artificial intelligence, as the issues it will only get more complex.
